Back from Yellowstone and Into the Studio

Hello again! I got back home last week and went into the studio the next day. But before I forget it happened, here are some of my sketches and memories of my week in America’s most beautiful and geothermally active wilderness park with my fellow artists…

My first quick landscape sketch of the trip, painted at the Grand Prismatic with icy rain and tourists everywhere. Cold but fun!

Gibbon Falls - sketch begun onsite and finished from photo reference later that evening, when my friends wanted to get back in the car and keep going. Part of painting outdoors involves learning to deal with weather challenges, and at Gibbon Falls the wind whistling down the gorge kept trying to toss my pencils and brushes into the canyon below. Whee!

Totally painted back at the rental, because stopping the car long enough for an onsite study would have gotten us in trouble, from our fellow tourists if not from the actual bison.

I’ve written additional thoughts about art and bison, and also NC Wyeth, elsewhere on my Patreon and when they become available to the public later this month you can check them out here…
Let’s Talk About Bison

Anyway, I’m back, I’ve responded to (most of?) my accumulated mail and I’m painting the next project up in the old studio. (IRL! With actual brushes!) I had a lovely time but it’s good to be back.
Cheers,
H.
