Three of my original watercolors will be part of the Ghost Gallery's “Art of Tarot II” show, which opens on Thursday, 14 September 2017. These small visionary works are card art for an WIP tarot deck that I may or may not create, tentatively called The Fairy Feller's Tarot. Like Schrödinger's cat, it is a thought experiment. This one is getting away from the thinker and emerging into the world.
A tarot deck as a personal challenge is both enticing and scary. It's a huge project to take on, but it offers a fascinating framework for intuitive visionary work. When I heard about the Ghost Gallery's call for tarot art, I chose to go intuitive. I'd ask the tarot what I should paint. If the tarot's project sounded interesting, I'd paint three pieces for the show.
I borrowed a friend's tarot deck, shuffled it well, and dealt myself three cards...
Page of Swords.
Okay, that worked for me...
Three real paintings for my so-far imaginary tarot deck will hang in Ghost Gallery through 8 October 2017, available to be bought, taken to new homes, become part of someone else's life. But what about the other 69 potential cards? Does the world want a tarot deck of my weird fairies and well-intentioned monsters? Is there enough intuition in my brain to imagine the rest of the deck? What do you think?
