I have a new painting in “Through the Looking Glass," the Changeling Artist Collect August Auction this month. Or perhaps an older drawing, with modifications.
I finished “Alice and the Cheshire Cat” last night. It’s painted in watercolors and gouache - quite a lot of gouache - on a giclee print on watercolor paper. The line art I drew several years ago and always meant to work up into a painting someday. Time can pass quickly when you mean to paint something “someday.”
An Alice-themed show seemed like a perfect time to revisit my old sketch.
I only meant to add a little transparent watercolor to the line art, but that’s not how it turned out. Now I could see a better way to pose the child character, and the background wanted to be more nebulous and, really, there were supposed to be foxglove flowers, it actually says so in the text!
With opaque gouache, all things are possible.
The piece is now half hand-colored-print and half original mixed media painting. But it is satisfyingly complete now, and I show it to you in its final, colorful form and perhaps it will even find a home this week.
I am very fond of Alice.
The “Through the Looking Glass” auction starts at noon EST on August 7th and ends at noon EST on August 11th.
